PHILADELPHIA — August 5th, 2015 — Penn Intermodal Leasing is proud to congratulate the winners of our 1st Scholarship Essay Contest. A total of $1,000 in prize money was awarded in order to raise awareness among college age students of current transportation industry events and the importance of a stable and efficient freight transportation system.
Lauren Chapman of Plainfield, IL was awarded 1st place for her essay entitled “Putting the Brakes on Bad Habits”. She will be attending Illinois State University. Our 2nd place recipient, Priscilla Sayles of Sequim, WA is attending Peninsula College. Amber Ibekwe of Eastvale, CA received the 3rd place award and is attending the University of California, Riverside campus. The Honorable Mention goes to Cody Bernheisel who is attending the College of St. Mary
Contestants chose to address one of the following topics:
- Imagine you’re the CEO of a trucking company. Describe what you would do to promote better health among your drivers.
- Chassis shortages and port congestion are two major challenges in freight transport. Describe why they are related, and discuss both the direct and indirect effects they have on freight transport, the supply chain and the consumer.
- Poorly maintained chassis result in breakdowns, late deliveries and reduce equipment lifespan. Suppose you were hired by a company that ships bulk liquids. Discuss the benefits of a maintenance program and how you would promote these benefits to customers.
The winning essayists all choose to be their own C.E.O. and to focus on improving the health of their fleet drivers. Solutions offered in the essays included: establishing a mentor program between younger drivers and more experienced drivers; discount health club memberships for nationwide chains; offering subsidies for healthy meal choices; installing ergonomic driver’s seats; providing a truck compatible crock-pot for drivers to cook healthy meals as they drive; a pedometer based exercise incentive program; and limiting shifts to allow for adequate sleep and work – family balance.
Congratulations to our winners! We wish all of our contestants a successful school year.
